Generating engineering drawings from a given data set (like an Excel sheet) is the dream of every engineer engaged in drawing such drawings. As a trial I set out to code in VBA and tried to generated Siteplans, X/Section, L/Sections and some other drawings from a given data set in Excel.

The drawings are in a specified scale and the standards are upto CAD drawings with precisions upto 6 digit decimal place. And the most important consideration is the speed and precision. Generating cross sectional drawing at 30m interval for a 15000m long road took hardly 120 seconds at 1:100m scale and on a A3 size paper.

The drawings can be exported to DES, DXF or any other vector type for further processing in Corel Technical, AutoCad or any other CAD/CAM software. Though the applet/addon is far from complete, it is very usable and so far I’ve generated C/S for more than 220 roads ranging from 1.8 Km to 27 Km length for some clients.

I am interested in further developing this applet and port it to CorelCAD, AutoCAD and I am planning the following features:

  2. AutoCad AutoLISP & VBA support
  3. CorelCAD VBA Support
  4. Linking Back from Drawing back to Excel Data
  5. Adding support for Bridge/Culvert drawing generation
